What is FEDEM?


FEDEM stands for Finite Element Dynamics in Elastic Mechanisms. It is a technology platform and engineering framework that enables virtual testing of intricate mechanical assemblies. The software is particularly adept at handling nonlinear structural dynamics and integrating control systems within mechanical analysis. With its robust 3D graphical environment, FEDEM provides tools for creating, solving, and post-processing models, making it an invaluable resource for understanding the physical behavior of complex systems.

Creating and Using FE Models


A FEDEM model represents a virtual test model of mechanical systems, combining individual parts with finite element (FE) characteristics. These models are created using FE modeling software and imported into FEDEM for simulation. The software supports various file formats, including MSC.Nastran® and SESAM input files, ensuring compatibility with popular FE modeling programs.



Visualization and Post-Processing


FEDEM offers intuitive post-processing capabilities, allowing users to visualize results through curves, animations, and comprehensive stress analysis. This helps in gaining a clear understanding of the physical behavior of the model under different conditions.




FEDEM is a software platform for modelling and simulation of complex mechanical systems, with a long history of development in multibody dynamics, structural mechanics, and numerical methods.


Norcompute developes FEDEM as a desktop application and extends its capabilities with additional solvers, including CFEM, a nonlinear finite element solver, and RFAT, for fatigue calculations. These tools can be used together to study nonlinear structural behaviour, dynamic response, and fatigue.


FEDEM is also available in the cloud, allowing multibody dynamics simulations to be performed directly in a web browser. This opens for web-based simulation workflows and integration with other engineering applications and dashboards for digital twins.
